Client

Tamworth Borough Council: along with providing a wide range of services for residents, many businesses based in Tamworth and the people who visit the borough, the Council is working to realise a vision called ‘Tamworth – celebrating our heritage, creating a better future’.

Approach

Merging two of the overarching conceptual ideas of tiles and textiles and building upon and incorporating the design principles for Tamworth town centre public realm, the preferred design of Town Hall Square utilises high quality hard landscape materials such as granite, sandstone, Dutch style clay pavers and granite steps.

New trees add height and opportunities for wildlife. Contemporary planters and street furniture provide the vessel for climate ready and wildlife friendly planting, wayfinding, CCTV, cycle parking and seating.

New seating comes in the form of timber slatted benches and a sculptural, long sandstone bench. Key to the public realm is lighting strategy which includes recessed uplighters to illuminate new trees, strip lighting to steps, benches and planters and bat friendly street lighting columns to create a comfortable and safe environment during the evening and night time.

New terrace is created in front of the Flex building for retail unit uses. The listed Town Hall is respected and showcased with new paving in keeping with its heritage status.

Impact

The project has been given planning consent with works planned to commence on site in 2024. Following Node’s novation by Speller Metcalfe, the supported coordination will be provided up until the project’s handover.
