Birmingham City Council: the local government body responsible for the governance of the City of Birmingham in England, which has been a metropolitan district since 1974

Approach

Node were commissioned by Godwin Developments to prepare a landscape design for a new civic space as part of the redevelopment of an existing shopping centre adjacent to St Barnabas Church on High Street, Erdington in Birmingham. This commission was undertaken alongside a heritage, townscape and visual impact assessment of proposals

The proposals included a mixed use development of retail, leisure and residential and the creation of two new squares on the high street. These proposals linked to Birmingham City Council’s aspirations of rejuvenating Erdington High Street and wider Covid 19 measures to ensure social distancing.

Impact

Design proposals have been submitted to Birmingham City Council who see this site and the creation of new civic spaces as an important catalyst to regenerating Erdington High Street. Our heritage and visual impact work also looked to amend the scheme to ensure views of St Barnabas Church were maintained. Our proposals for the civic spaces/ parklets will help to support High Street Funding bids that the council are looking to submit to address issues around Covid 19.

Ongoing discussion and negotiations are continuing how these proposals can be brought forward and the submission of a detailed application is currently being prepared.
