Approach

Node created a residential masterplan for a site on the edge of Essington in Staffordshire. The masterplan created a series of character areas that drew inspiration from local development forms to ensure variety and interest across the site.

A series of designed landscape squares and spaces, including a crescent were identified. A landscape buffer was created along the site’s eastern boundary with the M6, with additional planting and an acoustic bund to ensure that the potential for noise and visual impact from the motorway was minimised.

Result

Consultation revealed the need for a convenience store within the local area. The design for the site was able to be amended to incorporate a store on the principal frontage, creating a feature that would contribute to the needs of the existing local community as well as the new residents of the site itself.

Intense local need for bungalows was also revealed, which were able to be incorporated in a location within the site that also assisted in minimising the visual impact of the development on its surroundings. The result was a unique and contextually sensitive residential development
