Birmingham City University: one of the fastest growing and most dynamic universities in the Midlands

Approach

Working alongside Associated Architects, Node developed an overarching landscape design for the Eastside Masterplan Vision document, commissioned by Birmingham City University.

The emphasis for this early stage feasibility design was on promoting links between Eastside City Park and Jennens Road, with the creation of new pedestrianised streets and focal points to encourage activity and dwell time within the Eastside area. The reduction of the impact of Jennens Road was also a key part of the design progression, promoting a vision for the public realm in this area of the City that incorporates key buildings such as the Conservatoire and Millennium Point within an uplifting environment.

Impact

The masterplan produced is the first step for a landscape framework that would revitalise the Eastside area of Birmingham City Centre. Strategic transport corridors would remain, but would be embedded within a landscape setting that prioritises pedestrian experience and healthy environments.

Eastside City Park would flow into Cardigan Street, which becomes a key strategic route for pedestrians through the masterplan area and an active boulevard from which Birmingham City University development can occur.

The masterplan render and sketch 3-D visuals produced by Node were a key component of the Vision document compiled by Associated Architects.
